In both courses students will study Pure Maths, Statistics and Mechanics. The AS content is the same as the first year A-level content however it will be assessed more rigorously in the A-level exams. The Pure Maths extends the GCSE work on algebra, co-ordinate geometry, vectors and trigonometry, also introducing exponential and logarithmic functions and calculus. Mechanics and Statistics both involve the modelling of real world situations; Mechanics relating to the physical world and Statistics to the presentation and handling of data. While many of our students progress on to a university course with a mathematical component, all Maths students develop key transferable skills such as problem solving and logical thinking. Students will be encouraged to take part in extra-curricular Maths challenges each year, from which high achieving students can progress to the British Mathematical Olympiad.
