Computer Science AS/A Level

Computer Science AS/A Level

This subject is concerned with solving problems with computers. Programming is a large part of the course and students will learn to use at least one language to solve complex problems. At least two other languages will also be learnt, giving student strong foundations for further progression. Theory work covers Networking, Data software and Hardware and is covered though practical investigation wherever possible.

Additional
Grade 5 in GCSE Maths and grade 4 in GCSE English. You are also recommended to take AS or A level Maths alongside Computer Science.
Assessment
There will be on-screen and written examinations designed to test both your practical programming, problem solving skills and your understanding of the theory topics. In addition, the full A level contains an individual project worth 20% of the assessment.
Progression
Computer Science A level is an excellent qualification both for those who wish to go straight into work and for those who want to continue into Higher Education.

If you wish to apply for a Computing based degree, you are strongly recommended to combine the course with Mathematics and other scientific subjects.

Computer Science can be combined successfully with other disciplines; however the IT BTEC is a more suitable course if you are following a less technical programme.
