Former student Isabel Hardman took some time between the Labour and Conservative party conferences to come to Godalming College on Friday to talk to current students about a career in journalism.
Currently the deputy editor of The Spectator magazine and the editor of the magazine’s influential Coffee House blog, the political reporter and commentator spoke to an audience of first and second year students of the English Language A level.
After completing her A levels (including one in English Language) at Godalming College, Isabel then completed an English degree at the University of Exeter, before training to be a journalist.
She was interviewed by the college’s Head of English, David Kinder, and explained some of the technical aspects of creating an engaging and well-structured journalistic piece as well as describing her own career path and the skills needed to succeed.
Speaking later of the event, David Kinder says “The students, many of whom have ambitions to become journalists, were inspired and stimulated by hearing Isabel describe her work and the impact she has, not only in print journalism, but as an increasingly respected and prominent figure on TV and radio”.
