ClassAction Summer Season 2017
A CLASS ACT: Godalming College should celebrate its success in training new practitioners for an industry that is worth £8.8 million an hour to the UK economy (Sajid Javid). Thirteen of our practitioners have now gained places at some of the top dance and drama schools in the country including: East 15, Oxford School of Drama, PPA, MTA, Mountview, Performers, Birds and Italia Conti. We are so proud that our developing ethos of offering a unique performance art programme that aims to create a first class performance preparation training course that is underpinned by academic rigour and depth of reflection is having this profound effect. Sam Barrett (CA 2010-2012) is currently on tour as the male lead in Thoroughly Modern Millie, and he found time to return to lead a vocal/singing masterclass, and Jack Sunderland who graduated from LAMDA Drama School (CA-2010-2012) returned to lead a Masterclass in acting technique – all open to the whole college community. Godalming College has gained a unique reputation as one of the leading performance arts departments in the country and our alumni are now working in all fields of the industry, and more importantly – they are generously giving their time and their advice as they return to Godalming to network with our current practitioners. This work was recently recognised by the SFCA Enrichment and Employability Awards scheme.
PROVOKING, ENTERTAINING, POPULAR AND ECLECTIC: Performance work has run throughout the term and we have played to consistent ‘full-houses’ – most recently new pieces of musical theatre and dance work. We have the busiest Summer programme that we have ever had, including staging a musical in just under two weeks! There are not many other colleges, let alone arts venues that are producing that scale of work.
We have been touring schools in the Waverley Federation with our production focusing on mental health, depression and suicide – A List of Brilliant Things – which has received incredible feedback from staff “OMG – it was truly brilliant, it should be touring to so many more schools” Drama Teacher, Woolmer Hill – “It was the best thing I have seen, I couldn’t stop crying and smiling all at the same time, amazing” – Year 10 student.
For ‘Let’s Celebrate’ we celebrate the Summer with “Another Day In Sun” with dance and song on the field, featuring our first year dance and performing arts practitioners.
CELEBRATING THE ARTS AT GODALMING: We are pleased to present FLIPPIN NORA for this year’s Arts Festival, a brand new comedy – cabaret-theatre piece – proving we can do light and gentle, as well as hard hitting and loud!
It’s important to reflect on the vast numbers of students, families and friends who attend Class Action performances who may not be up on the stage but who are still able to participate fully in the cultural and artistic life of college because of the work of Class Action.
We finish the year with a bang, as we tackle Green Day’s Punk Rock Opera AMERICAN IDIOT – attempting to stage a full-scale musical in under two weeks … American idiot follws the exhilarating journey of a new generation of young Americans as they struggle to find meaning in a post-truth Trump world. This punk rock opera follows the story of Jesus of Suburbia, an adolescent anti-hero who is divided between 'rage and love'.
