Huge congratulations to Godalming's Football Team for reaching the English Schools FA Cup Final at Stoke City against Newcastle and Staffordshire Colleges.
Playing some fine, flowing football Godalming had the better of the first half but it was their opponents who took the lead and when a second goal was added just after half-time the momentum swung fully in Newcastle's favour. Tom Johnson went close to scoring late-on but the game eventually finished 3-0.
The action was streamed live with full commentary on ESFA TV watched by proud students and staff back here at Godalming where excitement spiked as top scorer Tate Furlonge-Walker and Elliot Harrison went close to scoring in the early exchanges. Twitter's man of the match Felix Butler was philosophical about the defeat:
"Considering they were a football academy, so play much more than us so had more preparation and more experience, I thought we did really well, and the score line didn't reflect the game!", he said.
11 of the 16-man cup final squad had progressed to the first team from the 2nd and 3rd teams and this speaks volumes not only for the boys' determination to improve but also for the quality of football at the College as a whole. We would like to extend good wishes to all our upper sixth players who leave this summer. They have proven themselves to be excellent players and their future university and club teams will be very lucky to have them. The College also eagerly anticipates next season with the lower sixth players, when we aim to go one step further and bring the trophy back for Godalming.
Well done lads!
