Godalming teams have enjoyed new facilities from September 2016 when two new netball courts and the international standard sports pitches at Ashtead Lane came into play. These have provided outstanding amenities which many opposing teams are envious of.

Our links with clubs such as Guildford Rugby, Surrey Scorchers, Fullham Football Club and The England Rugby Football Club all enhance the experience for our students and the capacity of the teams.

Sport report – December 2018

Football:

The 1st team at Godalming have had a great start to the season, remaining un-beaten and currently topping the surrey sixth form league. The side remain in two cup competitions also, namely the Association of Colleges in which they will next be up against Reigate College and English Schools FA Cups in which they will be playing Ealing & Hammersmith College respectively. Progression past these rounds will see them into the quarter finals which will be quite an achievement for the boys so we wish them all the best of luck.

The 2nd team have had a mixed start which is a strange feeling for the team! The past two seasons have seen the boys go largely un-defeated, however the boys currently find themselves 4th in the league having won 1, drawn 1 and lost 1. Thankfully there is still time to pick up results so the boys are optimistic of their chances of retaining the division title. A recent victory over Pulse Academy in the cup boosted confidence and has seen the team drawn against Godalming 3rd team in what is lining up to be an exciting match in College.

The 3rd team have had a disappointing start so far in terms of results despite playing well and dominating a number of games. The team currently sit 5th in league but have progressed in the cup after having beaten Merrist Wood College in a convincing 3-1 win. Next up is the match against the 2nds team! Numbers at training across all 3 squads continues to be very good which is pleasing for all the staff.

The Girls football team have unfortunately not had a great start to the year and are still waiting for their first win. However the team continue to enjoy training sessions which are taken by premiership team Fulham FC who provide coaches through Premier League funding. Partnership with the team has also resulted in an all expenses paid trip to Belgium being offered and 4 players have taken up the offer to attend this in December which the girls are excited about. A special surprise training session in which a premier league player is due to attend is upcoming too which we hope will kick start some victories!

Basketball:

The team have had great attendance at training so far making things very difficult for the coach to pick a team with so many keen players. Partnership with Surrey Scorchers Basketball team from Surrey Uni continues to operate well with this season’s coach being an ex-Godalming College student (now pro player), Henry Wilkins. The team currently sit 3rd in the highly competitive Surrey Sixth Form League and remain the Association of Colleges Cup competition where they are next due to play Woking College who the team are confident of beating after having already done so in the league.

Netball:

The 1sts netball side have had a good start to the season, currently sitting in joint 2nd place in the division and remaining in the Association of Colleges Cup competition where the Girls have just defeated Richard Taunton College by a huge margin – 102-6! The team also progressed to the Surrey Schools Nationals tournament after having beaten a number of private schools in the first regional tournament in October. We wish the Girls the best of luck for this!
The 2nds team are looking to retain their title in the division and have started very well having won all their matches to date which has resulted in them sitting top after beating their closest rival Collyers College last week 38-29.

Rugby:

The team remain undefeated so far this season and currently are top of the prestigious Association of Colleges league (South East) division. Not only this, the team are also top of the Surrey Sixth Form League which although is a lower standard, has provided the second string players more of an opportunity to play so the fact the team have remained un-beaten in both demonstrates great strength in the squads which is pleasing. Training turn-out remains good and the boys are regularly making use of the gym facility for their training throughout the week.

Hockey:

The mixed team have again, had a great start to the season under coach Vicky Shelbourne. They remain undefeated in the league with good wins over Esher and Collyers respectively. The boys team were drawn against a very tough opponent in Peter Symonds in an early cup round for the Association of Colleges Cup and unfortunately went out which was disappointing for the team. However they have the opportunity to challenge again at the upcoming regional tournament at Farnborough College. The team have been playing their matches out of Charterhouse Club again this season which has proven a fantastic local facility for the College to utilise so that Hockey matches are able to be provided for students every week.

X-country:

Ruth Jones continues to operate the X-country club for students every week and has recently taken a group to the AoC regional trials which Godalming qualified a runner for the Nationals tournament in April which is quite an achievement. Another event at the prestigious Lee Valley Athletics Centre is upcoming and Ruth will be taking another group of students to compete at a tournament there which the students are looking forward to.
