Godalming teams have enjoyed new facilities from September 2016 when two new netball courts and the international standard sports pitches at Ashtead Lane came into play. These have provided outstanding amenities which many opposing teams are envious of.

Our links with clubs such as Guildford Rugby, Surrey Scorchers, Fullham Football Club and The England Rugby Football Club all enhance the experience for our students and the capacity of the teams.

Sport report – March 2018

Godalming have continued to perform strongly overall across all sports since Christmas, doing well in the leagues in addition to three teams still in their respective cup competitions and standing a great chance of reaching / winning the finals.

Football

The first team currently sit top of the league having played all their matches. They are ahead of Esher (who have 2 games in hand) by 3 points, so although unlikely, there is a chance the boys may win the league should their rivals capitulate! They are also in the Surrey School FA Cup semi-final which is due to be played next week against Strodes College. Godalming have reached the final in the past two seasons so we are hopeful of doing so again and potentially winning the competition.

The second team remain top of their division also, sitting 3 points clear with a superior goal difference. This was helped in one match where the team thumped rivals Strodes 10-0 soon after returning from the Christmas break. In addition to their strong league performances, the team have recently reached the final of the league cup, knocking out Esher 2-0 in a fiercely fought, tense semi-final – scoring two late goals. The final will be played on the 28th March against East Surrey College and the boys are very much looking forward to the chance of winning the double.

The thirds are currently top of their division also, however they have played a game more than 2nd place so the team are watching other results with anticipation. The team recently won an important match against Merrist Wood College, beating them 4-0. This helped to stop a surge up the table from their opponents and any risk of being over-taken. Two more games are left in the 3rds team’s fixture list now and manager Daniel Bonney is hoping for a strong finish.

The Girls team have had some mixed results of late, with a heavy defeat to Chelsea FC Foundation team being the major disappointment for the girls. However numbers have been positive again this year and more 11 a-side matches have been played recently which is something the team have been wanting. They currently sit in 3rd place in the competitive Surrey Sixth Form League which this year, has more teams in it than ever before so to be in the top 3 is a great accomplishment.

Rugby

This year, the team have performed excellently and have won the prestigious AoC South East division. This resulted in the boys being put through to a play-off against Collyers which was played this week. Unfortunately, the team narrowly lost and weren’t able to go through to the semi-final to face the winners of other regions. However the boys have done fantastically well to win their division and are looking forward to next season.

Three girls Rugby players were also entered into the South East AoC trials to represent the region at the prestigious AoC Nationals event for Rugby. We are happy to say that two students made it into the team – Georgia Hoskins-Newman and Claudia Devereux. We wish them the best of luck at the event which is during the Easter break at Nottingham University.

Basketball

The Basketball team have overall had a strong squad this year and have had some great results. They are set to finish in the top 3 of the Surrey Sixth Form League which is good news. Unfortunately, the boys couldn’t make progress in the cup competition this year but have improved as the season has progressed and are also enjoying their new kit which came this year – finally being able to fit into the shorts!

Netball

Unfortunately for the first time in a long, long time; the 1sts netball team are not top of the league! This season has seen some more teams being entered into the Surrey Sixth Form League which has proved to raise the standard which the girls haven’t quite matched on key occasions. Despite this, the team are still in second place and have performed very well in Surrey tournaments - reaching the semi-final in one of them.

The 2nds however, are top of their division with a comfortable points lead after having only lost once all season. Maintaining the winning record of the Godalming netball teams. They are due to compete in the Surrey Schools B tournament next week – we wish them the best of luck for this as the season comes to a close.

Hockey

The first season for the Hockey team almost couldn’t have gone better. Despite there not being a league for us to enter this season (something which will be in place next year), the team have won almost all of their “friendly” matches against Colleges in Surrey and other areas. The team also have made it to the semi-final of the prestigious AoC mixed Hockey Cup. This is a great achievement in itself for the first year in a while of Hockey having regular competitive fixtures. We wish them the best of luck and will find out the draw for this match later next week.

Gym

The gym remains a popular facility amongst students, with many groups making use of it during the day and after lessons. Personal training sessions and gym programmes are all on offer to students with regular gym challenges also adding a competitive edge to exercises. gym equipment is in good condition and the facility is always mentioned by visitors and parents as an impressive part of what the College has to offer students.
