Helen Sharp (Travel and Tourism BTEC)

Case Study

Travel and Tourism is such a dynamic and vibrant industry, I just knew that it would suit my bubbly personality. I love talking and dealing with customers, add in a sunny or snowy location and the thought of that was just perfection, hence why I pursued this career right out of sixth form college. I grew up with both my parents working in the hospitality and entertainment industry, so I found that communicating with people of varying ages and needs came very naturally and interested me immensely.

I ended up taking a five year GAP year, travelling and working overseas, before I decided to head to university and take a degree in Tourism Management at Southbank. Throughout the course, I found multiple practical applications from my previous work experiences. Having worked as a holiday rep, for tour operators, and within head offices for both sun and ski products, my wealth of experience paid off when taking my degree. Once I had gained my BA I was granted the opportunity to work for a cruise company, organising corporate and incentive bookings, as well as cruise destinations. This took me all over the world, visiting Alaska, The Caribbean and The Mediterranean with clients, and eventually led me to work as an events manager, organising conferences all over the world. I loved every moment of my career abroad, every day was different and exciting which really makes you fall in love with the travel and tourism industry.
