I chose to study music at A level because I’ve always enjoyed studying music through learning the piano, and at GSCE level. I knew it would be a nice contrast to take a creative subject alongside maths and economics, my other subjects. I am very glad that I made this decision, music has turned out to be my favourite subject at college and I am now going to study film music next year Leeds conservatoire.
What I love most about the course is that it is very coursework heavy, this reduces the pressure when it comes up to the final exam. 60% of the course is made up performance and composition. This gives me lots of performance opportunities and time to improve on my piano playing. We also have lots of time throughout the year to compose which has prepared me well for university next year. The course is perfect for a wide range of music students as we study various styles of music from fusion music to jazz/pop. My favourite style of music to study has been film music, where we have been learning about various cues from Herrmann’s Psycho and Elfman’s Batman Returns.
All the staff in the music department are so friendly and willing to help you with anything you need which makes lesson time very enjoyable. Also, the department is quite small compared to others which I really like as you can get 1-1 help. Lastly, there are many extra-curricular clubs you can join such as the orchestra, jazz band, and choir, which I have loved being part of at Godalming College as they allow you to be a part of the concerts throughout the year such as the Christmas and Spring concerts.
