When I chose my A-Levels, I knew I wanted to study biology and chemistry, but did not know what to choose for my third A-Level. I was starting to feel hopeless, walking around the college on the open day, when I stumbled onto a room with teachers talking passionately about the Ancient Romans and Greeks. I felt such a desire to learn more about them that I immediately decided on Ancient History - and it is the best decision I have ever made. You learn about the origins of democracy and intelligent thought on the Greek side, as well as Roman Britain, and our own Celtic origins. Not only does ancient history give you the most profound insight into the history of our world, but it also provides skills that last a lifetime - skills I utilised in biology (to write essays), my EPQ, and skills I will take with me to university. No matter what subjects you’re studying, or will study in the future, ancient history will provide you with a range of transferable skills that will last a lifetime.
