The politics course and Godalming College has been incredible for me and has been a great stepping stone for university where I am planning on going to Bristol next year to study Politics and International Relations. On top of the academic support and foundation that the course has provided me with to succeed. I have also benefitted significantly from the open environment that we have in lessons which enables the students to converse with each other and the teachers to expand our views while covering the course. My favourite area of Politics has always been debating, which allows me to argue to my heart’s content, without getting in trouble for once and debating was always the most exciting part of my politics lessons. I went to the lessons because I enjoyed them, not just because they were on my timetable.
Being President of the Student Union has also been massively beneficial to me, as it has given me the skills of time management and admin, which I recognise now that I needed to develop before I came to Godalming to succeed at university. Whether, it was attending meetings, giving presentations, or emailing a colleague, I genuinely believe that my year as SU president has firmly set me up for the future. Overall, Godalming has not only helped me academically, but it also allowed me to transition from my small school of about 100 students to a relatively big college of 2000 students, of which I didn’t know many when I came. The big jump was a massive worry for my mum but I wanted to take it and the open social atmosphere around the college in their social areas like the Costa and the Piazza have made that jump seamless.
