Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and the holy month of fasting. At Godalming College we have many students and members of staff that have been balancing Ramadan with their busy college life. We’ve spoken to our new Student Union president, Attiya about her experience.
How do you manage fasting and keeping up with College life and your other activities?
Balancing fasting with college life and netball during Ramadan can be challenging, but I manage by planning my schedule carefully and staying mindful of my energy levels. I make sure to eat nutritious meals at Suhoor/Sehri and Iftar, stay hydrated, and get enough rest to keep up with classes and training. Ramadan is also a time of religious and self reflection, which helps me stay focused and motivated.
How will you celebrate Eid, and who with?
When Eid arrives, I’ll celebrate with my family and close friends, starting with the morning prayer at the mosque, followed by a big feast and visiting relatives.
How does your religion help you get through tough times?
My faith plays a huge role in helping me through tough times, reminding me to be patient and trust that everything happens for a reason.
What questions have you been asked about your faith?
Over the years, I’ve been asked many questions about Islam, from fasting to prayer, and of course, about my hijab. Some people are just curious, while others assume I’m forced to wear it, but I choose to wear the hijab as a symbol of my faith, modesty, and identity. It’s an important part of who I am, and I appreciate when people ask respectfully, as it gives me a chance to share my perspective.
