Attending Godalming College has allowed me to develop a strong passion for textiles design. Alongside Textiles, I’ve studied Graphic design and Sociology which I have really enjoyed. I have been able to combine the techniques I’ve learnt from both graphic design and textiles and use them to push my designs further. I have always been fascinated by pattern, texture and material and love experimenting with different surfaces and media. The textiles course has allowed me to learn a wide variety of new techniques and then focus on the ones I’ve particularly enjoyed. I’ve been given the opportunity to explore a selection of different artists work as well as developing my own personal style.
My recent project has been focused on Oceanic structures where I’ve taken inspiration from different types of coral to create a range of final pieces. I have especially loved the skill of screen printing and have been given the opportunity to really push this. I have created multiple print designs and looked at printing onto different surfaces in a selection of colour combinations. From learning such a wide variety of skills, I have been able to combine them and produce interesting, textured outcomes for my project. I have enjoyed having creative freedom in producing my final pieces and having access to the studio space at college. It has been incredible to have teachers that have inspired me creatively and supported me in improving my work.
After Godalming College I’m taking a Gap year, and after I intend to apply to study textiles design at university. This will hopefully give me the opportunity to then work in the field of textiles and turn my passion into a career.
