I chose Media Studies at Godalming as it was an entirely new field that I had never ventured into before yet had always been of significant interest to me. The course itself gives a great overview and understanding of what modern and traditional media is as well as how we as the audience are led to interpret what we see. Media as a subject enables us to understand aspects of the world and how they go on to impact our lives whether that be in a minimal or colossal way. I had never studied Media before choosing it as an A level however the course structure and incredible support from teachers meant an existing knowledge of Media was not needed; instead, I had the opportunity to begin exploring the course with an open mind furthering my interest and ability to improve throughout the course. The lessons themselves were engaging and gripping while still ensuring that we could independently find and understand each element of what we were looking at as well as the impact it holds in a wider context.
On top of the incredibly wide range of topics and products we study through the course there is also a coursework segment that accounts for thirty percent of our final grade; This was an independent and creative perspective on several of the biggest industries in the media. I chose to create a magazine for my coursework where I took on roles of photographer, stylist, Editor, and writer allowing me to take control and get to grips with the reality of what it means to work in the media which helped me choose what direction to pursue after college.
After college I will be going to the university of Brighton to study Fashion Communication, where I will use the expertise that I have learnt in Media Studies; as well as hopefully take those skills and experience all the way into a career in the media.
